16. THE TRYFLES "Your Lies/When I see These Guy" ( 1985)

In the early 80's New-York new garage scene was very active and the 3 main bands "Outta Place", "The Fuzztones" and  "The Tryfles" had their records issued on the same label, DJ Martignon's Midnight Records.
The Tryfles were John Fay (who played also in an early formula of Outta Place), Peter Stuart Kohman, Ellen O"neil et Lesya Karpilov. It was a geat live band, playing main venues in NY. they signed with Midnight and made one LP (that you can find on the great Twilightzone blog THERE) and this single in 85. The band dismissed before the single was out as recalls Fay "the single was released seven month after we did the master I never could figure out why there was such a delay. perhaps the band might have survived if it hat some product". It's good type of 80's revival garage even if it's less wild than Outta Place of the early Fuzztones and more psyche.

You can read more about the Midnight Records'story on Bananas Magazine HERE.

15. THE REAL KIDS "All Kindsa Girls" Star Rythm 7" (1981)

OK... htis is the REAL STUFF! The kind of record you would take with you if your house was burnin down! This ain't the legendary Sponge records original issue but it's the american one on the great Star Rythm label and it's the full lenght recording of "All Kinsa Girls" and, as I'm concerned, this song is one of the best rock'n'roll songs ever wrote!! On B side is the great mid-tempo Common at Noon also typically Boston sound ... Imagine what those 4 guys have played  from The Real Kids to the Taxi Boys, The Lyres, The Classic-ruins, The Nervous Eaters, The Varmints ....

OK...

Don't Forget you still can buy this single with another cover and many more great stuff on Norton: HERE.

14. HYPSTRZ "Live EP" (1979)

Before 1980, there wasn't many bands playing 60's  influenced garage rock; In Mineapolis, there was HYPSTRZ, a furious quartet mixing punk energy with sixties covers. The band leaders were the Batson brothers en guitar and vocals, the boys who grew up with r'n'r, their dad was writing reviews and chronicles, reinvented garage punk in the same way than DMZ. here's their first Ep live at jay's Longhorn with four covers at the speed of sound "Hold On", "Can't Stand The Pain" (2nd DMZ reference), "Action Woman" (as for me the best version with the Litter's One) and "Hey Joe". That EP impressed Greg Shaw who issued the next year a full Lp from the same gigs from 1979. You can find the EP + The Lp + more unissued tittles on the Bomp CD for only few bucks. HYPSTRZ realised  never issued demos with original material and disbanded in 1982, the Batson brothers founder then The Mighty Mofos but that's an other story. They still playtime to time as HYPSTRZ or Mighty Mofos.

HYPSTRZ nowadays... toujours verts!!

13. THE SLEEPWALKERS "Murder Slices" (1999)

I come back from Italy, nice country, good food and nice people. Between ruins and beach, I found time to purchase some hidden treasures from Soul Food at Roma. here's the 3rd single from pre-Rippers Cagliari band The Sleepwalkers. This garage band included Paolo Bonito an Giovanni Di Malta (now alltogether in The Rippers), Giuseppe Adamo on guitar and Marcello Pibiri on drums (Replacing legendary cagliari drummer Luca Barranca). They released 2 other singles and an album on Gravidder and Psychout records. It seems there's a Sleepwalker Club organizing garage gigs in Sardigna but I don't know if the band took his name from the club or the reverse.  The A side is an original song, classic punk garage, less speed than the Rippers stuff. The B side includes two covers Malibus" "Cry" (on Back from the Grave vol1) and Sonics' "Boss Hoss" that reminds me the Nomads version. It was issued on Milano's Hang Over records in '99. With a little chance, you still can find it.

12. THE RAUNCH HANDS "Stomp It" (1984)

The first time i've heard about The Rauch Hands was when I bought this single way back in 1984 at Midnight Records. At this time, I didn't make the link between the singer Mike Chandler and Outta Place but the cover looked good and the pictures, the band's name  and the covers were a promess of roots R'n'R !! If the two covers on B side "I Got a Woman" and "Stampede" sound very classic, the A side "Stomp it" prefigures the raw mix of Mariconda's twanggy garage guitar sound with a shot of hot rythm'n'blues. Later the band developped this style on Crypt and were one of the greatest live band from the 90s.
To learn more about the debut of the Rauch Hands, read the story from Mike Tchang himself here.

And I add this cool video from the same period featuring The Rauch Hands and The Clintons , from  Peter Hutton's movie "No Picnic" filmed in 85.

11. The BOTTLE UPS "Long Gone" (1986)

The Bottle-Ups were a swedish bands from the eighties. They played rock'n'roll instrumentals and were highly influenced by Link Wray. After on EP and a 12" mini album on their own label Rainbow Music, they signed on Amigo, The Nomads'label, and released a full LP  "Frantic Saloon Hoedown" in 1985. This single was issued by Amigo in 1986 and oddly contains no instru but two songs with great vocals by Per Ahlen, singer of The Waywards Souls. The A side is a good cover of Peter Greenberg' Customs "Long Gone" in the same style than the Nomads. The B side is a speed rockabilly beat tune "Too Much talk". Despite the success of this new formula, The Bottle Ups disbanded in 1987. Their guitarist Robert Johnson and bassist Göran Sahlin went to play with Per Ahlen and Nick Vahlberg of The Nomads in The Rumblers (named after Link Wray "Rumble"). Johnson still plays in Robert Johnson and Puncdrunks mixing his R'n'R instru with electro...

10.THE LUBBERS "Make You Mine" EP (1987)

I don't know much about this band and this Ep that I've found this week in a second hand record store. The Lubbers were from Amsterdam (Nederlands) and recorded this 4 songs at Oktopus Studio, it was released in early 1987 on dutch label Kelt Records wich released  a lot of cool stuff from 84 to 94 as The Other Side. The making of rhis record was the subjet of a TV film "The Lubbers maken een plaat" that shows the band in interview and studio but as my dutch is very poor i didn't understand a word! The music goes from classic garage-rock "Make You Mine" to more power-pop "I Know", my favorite is the last song "Pictures of Lily" with great mélody reminding the Jam... If you know more about this band, don't hesitate to let a comment!!
